How to Measure‍for a Loft Ladder

When measuring for a loft ladder, the first thing to consider is the type of loft ladder you wish to install. You’ll have a choice of sliding, folding, concertina, or telescopic, each differing in size, material, and operation. Each loft ladder is best suited to specific circumstances, making it easier to determine the ideal ladder for your needs.

Our short guide below outlines the ideal uses for each type of ladder, and the measurements required to ensure a perfect fit.

The process involves measuring the height from the floor to the loft, the size of the loft opening, and the clearance needed for the ladder to operate effectively. By following these key steps, you can choose the right loft ladder that fits perfectly and meets your needs.

Understanding Different Types of Loft Ladders

Understanding Different Types of Loft Ladders

When choosing a loft ladder, it's important to consider the different types available to find the one that best suits your needs. Each type of loft ladder has its own unique features and benefits, making some more suitable for certain spaces than others. Here’s an overview of the main types of loft ladders:

Sliding Ladders

Sliding Ladders

Sliding loft ladders are characterised by their simple yet effective design. These ladders consist of multiple sections that slide over each other, making them straightforward to use. They are perfect for lofts with plenty of vertical space but limited horizontal space below the opening. Installation is typically uncomplicated, requiring just a bit of assembly.

One of the main advantages of sliding ladders is their stability and ease of operation. However, it’s essential to ensure that there is enough clearance below the loft hatch to accommodate the ladder when it is fully extended.

Folding Ladders

Folding loft ladders offer a compact and efficient solution for loft access. Unlike sliding ladders, folding ladders are segmented and fold up into sections, reducing the space needed for storage. This feature makes them suitable for lofts with limited vertical clearance.

Folding ladders are generally easy to install and manoeuvre, as they don’t need as much room to operate. Their versatility makes them a popular choice for many homes, providing a practical balance between functionality and space efficiency. These ladders are perfect for situations where space is at a premium but robust access is needed.

Telescopic Ladders

Telescopic loft ladders stand out due to their innovative design, where sections slide into each other like a telescope. This design makes them exceptionally compact and easy to store when not in use. They are an excellent choice for lofts with minimal storage space.

Telescopic ladders are lightweight yet sturdy, and their adjustable height makes them versatile for various loft configurations. Their flexibility is unmatched, as they can be extended to the precise length needed and retracted for storage.

Concertina Ladders

Concertina loft ladders are known for their unique accordion-like structure. This design allows them to fold up into a very small footprint, making them ideal for tight spaces and small loft openings. Despite their compact size, concertina ladders are strong and durable, providing a safe means of access to the loft. They are particularly beneficial in homes with limited space where other ladder types might not fit.

The installation of concertina ladders is relatively straightforward, and their compact nature ensures that they take up minimal space when not in use. They are an excellent solution for homeowners seeking a reliable yet unobtrusive ladder for occasional loft access.

Step-by-Step Measurement Guide

Accurate measurements are essential for selecting the right loft ladder and ensuring a successful installation. Follow this detailed guide to measure your loft space correctly.

Floor to Loft Floor Height

The first measurement to take is the vertical height from the finished floor of the room to the loft floor, including the thickness of the floorboards, joists and ceiling (measurement c illustrated in the diagram below). This measurement determines the length of the ladder you will need.

Floor to Loft Floor Height

Floor to Ceiling Height

This measurement is needed for the folding loft ladder type.

Loft Opening Size

For sliding telescopic and concertina loft ladders, you will need the loft ladder hatch measurements - the length and width of the opening. If you plan to increase the size of your loft ladder hatch, consider obstructions, such as joists and cables.

For loft ladders that come with a fitted hatch and frame, such as our Hobby Timber Folding Loft Ladder, measure the maximum length and width your trapdoor could be, as usually they can’t be altered to fit your existing hatch.

Storage: Vertical and Horizontal Clearance

These measurements are taken for our sliding loft ladder to ensure there is enough space/ clearance to manoeuvre the ladder from its resting position to its operational position.

Vertical

This measurement is taken from the hinge of your hatch vertically upwards to the nearest obstruction (measurement F in the diagram above).

Horizontal

This measurement is taken from the hinge of your hatch horizontally along your loft floor to the nearest obstruction (measurement E in the diagram above).

Swing Clearance and Landing Space

Swing clearance refers to the space needed for a folding loft ladder to open and close properly (measurement D in the diagram below)

Swing Clearance and Landing Space

To measure this, start from the hinge of your loft hatch and measure to the nearest wall or any obstruction. Even if the loft ladder fits perfectly within the loft space, insufficient swing clearance can prevent it from unfolding correctly, impacting its functionality.

Choosing the Right Loft Ladder

Choosing the Right Loft Ladder

Selecting the right loft ladder depends heavily on the specific space and requirements of your loft. Here’s how each type of ladder fits into different scenarios:

Ample Vertical Space, Limited Horizontal Space Below the Opening

Sliding Ladders are ideal for lofts with plenty of vertical space but limited horizontal space below the opening. They extend fully and are straightforward to install and operate, making them perfect for homes with high ceilings. However, they do require ample horizontal storage space within the loft.

Limited Vertical Clearance

Folding Ladders are best suited for lofts with limited vertical clearance. They fold into sections, making them compact and easy to store without taking up much space in the loft or below.

Minimal Storage Space

Telescopic Ladders are perfect for lofts with minimal storage space. Their sections slide into each other, making them very compact when not in use. They are lightweight and versatile, suitable for various loft configurations.

Tight Spaces and Small Loft Openings

Concertina Ladders excel in tight spaces and small loft openings. Their accordion-like design requires little room to operate and folds into a compact footprint. They are particularly useful in homes with limited space both above and below the hatch.
