Platform Step Ladders Platform Step Ladders

Our platform step ladders are built for professionals who need a stable, secure working surface at height. Whether you're carrying out maintenance, electrical work, or installations, a step ladder with a platform gives you the safety and confidence to work efficiently.

Manufactured in the UK, our platform ladders are available in a variety of sizes - from 3-tread models to tall platform step ladders with up to 24 treads.

Manufactured in the UK and certified to BS EN 131 where stated, they’re built for both professional and non-professional use – providing a robust product you can trust.

Platform & Reach Heights

A typical 3 tread step ladder offers:

  • Approximate platform height: 0.60 - 0.70 metres (model dependent)

  • Approximate reach height: 2.30 - 2.40 metres (based on average user reach of 1.75 m standing on the platform)

  • Swingback step ladders do not have a platform; the highest standing level is typically the bottom tread, offering a slightly lower safe working height of around 1.90 - 2.00 metres, depending on your own height and reach.

What Are 3 Tread Ladders Ideal For?

These ladders are a practical choice for:

  • Home and garden use: such as hedge trimming or cupboard access

  • Offices and retail environments: shelf stocking, signage updates, or maintenance

4 Tread Step Ladders 4 Tread Step Ladders

Our 4 tread step ladders offer more reach than a typical 3-tread model, making them ideal for slightly taller tasks while still remaining compact and easy to move. Whether you're working at ceiling height, decorating, or accessing shelving in commercial or domestic settings, these ladders provide the extra height and stability needed to work safely and comfortably.

Certified to BS EN 131 where stated, and manufactured in the UK, each ladder is built to ensure top-tier quality and performance for both trade professionals and home users.

Platform & Reach Heights

A 4-tread step ladder typically offers:

  • Platform height: approximately 0.80 – 0.90 metres (model dependent)
  • Reach height: approximately 2.50 – 2.60 metres, based on an average user height of 1.75 metres standing on the platform

This makes a 4-tread platform step ladder ideal for ceiling-height tasks in homes and workplaces, such as changing light bulbs, decorating, or accessing storage in high cupboards.

  • Swingback step ladders do not have a platform. On a 4 tread swingback model, only the second tread (from the ground) is generally considered a safe standing level. This gives an estimated working height of 2.20 – 2.30 metres, depending on the user's height and the ladder’s design.

What Are 4-Tread Step Ladders Ideal For?

A 4-tread step ladder is a versatile choice for everyday tasks that require safe access to slightly elevated areas. Its balance of reach and portability makes it a popular option across trade, commercial, and domestic environments.

Common uses include:

  • Changing lightbulbs and ceiling fixtures in standard-height rooms
  • Painting, decorating, and DIY at mid-level heights
  • Stock rotation and shelving access in retail or storeroom settings
  • Light maintenance work in offices, schools, and small industrial units
  • Garden and outdoor tasks like hedge trimming or cleaning windows

Whether you need a lightweight ladder for quick access or a sturdy platform for longer jobs, 4 tread ladders offer a practical and space-efficient solution.

Key Features Across the Range

Our 4 tread step ladders are available in a selection of styles and materials to suit a wide range of tasks and environments. Depending on the model, you’ll find:

  • Available in aluminium, fibreglass (non-conductive), and timber
5 Tread Step Ladders 5 Tread Step Ladders

Our 5 tread step ladders provide a practical solution for tasks that require a bit more height, without compromising on portability or ease of use. They're a popular choice for decorators, electricians, facilities teams, and home users needing safe access to ceilings or elevated areas.

Certified to BS EN 131 (where stated) and manufactured in the UK, these ladders are built for long-lasting performance in both trade and domestic environments.

Platform & Reach Heights

A 5-tread step ladder typically offers:

  • Platform height: approximately 1.10 – 1.20 metres

  • Reach height: approximately 2.85 – 2.95 metres, based on a user standing on the platform with an average reach of 1.75 metres

  • If you're using a swingback step ladder without a platform, the highest safe standing level is usually the third tread up, offering a working height closer to 2.50 – 2.70 metres, depending on your height and the specific model.

What Are 5-Tread Ladders Ideal For?

5 tread step ladders are ideal for:

  • Painting walls or ceilings in rooms with higher-than-average ceilings

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I use a step ladder safely?

Always check that the step ladder can take your weight. A load weight should be marked on the ladder. Then, once you have opened the step ladder, make sure to lock the braces and place it on a stable surface and close to where you need to work.

How tall is a step ladder?

A step ladder can be anywhere between one to four metres in height, depending on which type you choose.

Can step ladders be used as straight ladders?

No, standard step ladders are not designed to be used as straight ladders. They rely on their A-frame structure for stability, and using them fully open and leaning against a wall can be dangerous. If you need a ladder that can function as both a stepladder and an extension ladder, look for a combination ladder or multi-purpose ladder specifically designed for that use.

Do your step ladders come with handrails?

Yes. Many of our platform step ladders are available with handrails or a rear guardrail for added safety when working at height. Check individual product pages to see configuration options.

What’s the difference between a swingback step ladder and a platform step ladder?

A swingback step ladder is a compact folding ladder with no platform - it’s ideal for quick access jobs and takes up minimal storage space. A platform step ladder includes a larger top surface for standing and is better suited for longer, hands-on tasks that require more stability.

Can you stand on the top step of a ladder?

This very much depends on the type of step ladder. If you are using a swingback step ladder then you should not stand on the top. If you are using a platform step ladder, then it is safe to stand on the platform at the top.

How are step ladders measured?

Step ladders are measured by the number of treads, including the top platform if it’s designed to be stood on. For example, a 5-tread ladder has four steps plus the platform.

You’ll also see:

- Platform height - the height to the top step or platform

- Closed height - the height when folded

To estimate working height, add roughly 1 metre to the platform height, based on average reach.

Who should use a fibreglass step ladder?

A fibreglass step ladder can be used by anyone, but they are mainly used by electricians. This is because they are not allowed to use an aluminium step ladder. A fibreglass step ladder will protect them in the event that a live wire touches the ladder as it insulates them from an electrical shock.
