FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I use a step ladder safely?

Always check that the step ladder can take your weight. A load weight should be marked on the ladder. Then, once you have opened the step ladder, make sure to lock the braces and place it on a stable surface and close to where you need to work.

How tall is a step ladder?

A step ladder can be anywhere between one to four metres in height, depending on which type you choose.

Can step ladders be used as straight ladders?

No, standard step ladders are not designed to be used as straight ladders. They rely on their A-frame structure for stability, and using them fully open and leaning against a wall can be dangerous. If you need a ladder that can function as both a stepladder and an extension ladder, look for a combination ladder or multi-purpose ladder specifically designed for that use.

Do your step ladders come with handrails?

Yes. Many of our platform step ladders are available with handrails or a rear guardrail for added safety when working at height. Check individual product pages to see configuration options.

What’s the difference between a swingback step ladder and a platform step ladder?

A swingback step ladder is a compact folding ladder with no platform - it’s ideal for quick access jobs and takes up minimal storage space. A platform step ladder includes a larger top surface for standing and is better suited for longer, hands-on tasks that require more stability.

Can you stand on the top step of a ladder?

This very much depends on the type of step ladder. If you are using a swingback step ladder then you should not stand on the top. If you are using a platform step ladder, then it is safe to stand on the platform at the top.

How are step ladders measured?

Step ladders are measured by the number of treads, including the top platform if it’s designed to be stood on. For example, a 5-tread ladder has four steps plus the platform.

You’ll also see:

- Platform height - the height to the top step or platform

- Closed height - the height when folded

To estimate working height, add roughly 1 metre to the platform height, based on average reach.

Who should use a fibreglass step ladder?

A fibreglass step ladder can be used by anyone, but they are mainly used by electricians. This is because they are not allowed to use an aluminium step ladder. A fibreglass step ladder will protect them in the event that a live wire touches the ladder as it insulates them from an electrical shock.
